Caboolture
Pleasant commuter town north of Brisbane.
Located only 45 km north of Brisbane and 15 m above
sea-level, Caboolture is now a commuter township of around
40,000 people on the edges of Greater Brisbane. The regular
fast trains, which take less than an hour, transport
residents to and from work in the city. The staples of the
local economy are the service industries, dairying, mixed
farming, timber, cattle and tropical fruit.
The Caboolture area was settled in 1842 when the land
around the Moreton Bay penal colony was opened up to free
settlers. By the mid-1860s the local pastoralists were
experimenting with sugarcane and cotton. In 1867 a tiny
settlement was established to service the needs of miners
making the trek from Brisbane to the goldfields near Gympie.
The local shire was constituted in 1879 and in 1888 the
railway line from Brisbane was opened.
It is thought that the town's name probably derives from
the local Aboriginal word 'cabul', 'kabultur', 'kabul-tur'
or 'rabultja' meaning 'carpet snake' or 'place of the carpet
snake'. The spelling 'Caboolture' was first used in 1848.
Markets are held each Sunday from 6.00 a.m. to midday at
the showgrounds in Beerburrum Rd.

Visitor Information
The Caboolture Tourist Information Centre is located at 55
King Street,
Historical Village
The town's major attraction is the superb Historical Village
which is located on Beerburrum Road to the north of the town
centre. It currently has 66 old buildings and is becoming so
vast that it will soon constitute a separate township. The
buildings include a barber's shop, post office, police
station, stable, chook house, shire hall, blacksmith's
foundry, sawmill, lockup, and morgue. Apart from all the
interesting old buildings the village actually has shops
where normal trading occurs. On the Australia Day weekend
and Fathers Day Sunday all the machinery in the village is
operational. There is an excellent booklet The History of
Caboolture and Districts, published by the Caboolture
Historical Society, which is available at the head office.
It provides detailed histories of most of the important
buildings.
Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology
Another interesting tourist attraction is the excellent
Abbey Museum (situated on Old Toorbul Road leading to Bribie
Island) which claims to have one of the finest private
museum collections in Australia. Owned by the Confraternity
of St Michael the collection is unusual in that it has
representative artefacts and art works from cultures as
diverse as Ancient Egypt and Medieval Europe. A far cry from
the typical Australian folk museum the Abbey collection

Caboolture Airfield and War Plane Museum
Hot-air ballooning, gliding and skydiving are popular at the
Caboolture Airfield. It is also home to the War Plane Museum
which houses an extensive collection of aircraft, military
vehicles, World War II memorabilia and an audio-visual
presentation. It is located at 104 McNaught Rd, tel: (07)

Delaney's Creek Winery & Vineyard
Delaney's Creek Winery & Vineyard is located at 70 Hennessey
Rd, Delaney's Creek. It is open from 10.00 a.m. to daily,
closing at 4.00 p.m. on weekdays and 5.00 p.m. on weekends.
They produce cabernet franc, shiraz cabernet franc, marsanne
blanc, muscat rose, verdelho and fortified wines.
