Bundaberg (including Lady Elliot Island and Lady
Musgrave Island National Park)
One of Queensland's large and prosperous coastal cities.
It is impossible not to be impressed by Queensland's great
and gracious coastal cities. Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay,
Townsville and, to a lesser extent, Cairns all have a
charming late-nineteenth century elegance about them.
Tropical parks and gardens, lazy green-brown tropical
rivers, handsome Classical Revival buildings with solid
Doric and Corinthian columns, wide streets, the sight of
palm and fig trees, the heady scent of bougainvillea and
jasmin - these are the memories which filter to the surface
when one looks back. Of course each city has its own
idiosyncracies. In the case of Bundaberg, images of the
famous Bundaberg Rum Distillery, the incongruity of Bert
Hinkler's stucco-and-brick English home in the middle of
luxuriant sub-tropical botanical gardens, and the Lutheran
Church with its huge Biblical text facade - all of these
linger long after memories of the old Commercial Bank and
the post office buildings have faded from memory.
Bundaberg is located on the Burnett River 14 m above
sea-level, 20 km from the coast and 371 km north of
Brisbane. It is a typical subtropical city with an annual
rainfall of 1159 mm and average daily temperatures ranging
from 22°C in winter to 29°C in summer. The name 'Bundaberg'
is a combination of 'Bunda', the name of the local
Aboriginal tribe, with 'burg', the Saxon word for town.
The first European explorer in the area was Henry Russell
in 1842. He was followed five years later by the government
surveyor James C. Burnett, after whom the local river is
named. Burnett's report on the agricultural potential of the
area was unfavourable. How he could have missed the rich
black volcanic soils remains a mystery. Consequently it
wasn't until 1866 that the first white settlers, the Steuart
brothers, moved into the area. J. and G. Steuart were
timbercutters and they came to the area to exploit the
stands of hardwood in the hinterland.
Settlement rapidly increased thereafter. In the 1870s
significant numbers of German and Danish migrants selected
and cleared land in the area, cultivating the fertile river
soils. Slowly stores, hotels, sawmills and factories began
to appear along the banks of the Burnett River.
Being at the centre of Queensland's sugar industry.
Bundaberg was central to the importation of indentured
labour. The excellent History of Bundaberg and Districts
(available at the Bundaberg & Districts Historical Museum)
records:
'In 1879, a schooner sailed up the Burnett River with the
first group of South Seas Islanders/Kanakas, recruited as
indentured labourers for the sugar cane industry. They were
engaged for three years at a small yearly wage, plantation
owners and farmers having to provide living accommodation
and food.
For the next 30 years Melanesian and Polynesian Islanders
provided almost the complete field labour for cane
plantations and farms. At one stage, 3000 lived in the
district. This labour trade stopped in 1901 when the
Commonwealth Government of Australia was established. Some
Islanders chose to stay in the Bundaberg district.
In 1882, 80 Ceylonese labourers were brought to Bundaberg
under a work contract. This venture was not popular and was
not repeated, although some remained in the district.'
As the area became the centre of a thriving sugarcane
industry refineries and sugar mills were built and the
population grew rapidly. A brewery commenced operations in
1883.
In 1891 the superb Commercial Bank building (now occupied
by the National Australia Bank) was completed. Its
architectural quality is indicative of the importance
municipal Bundaberg had achieved by this time.
The railway reached the town in 1888. As a railhead, a
centre for a rapidly developing sugar industry and an
important port (apart from the sugar, copper was arriving
from the Mt Perry mines), Bundaberg became a major
transportation, industry and service centre.
Bundaberg's claim to literary fame probably resides with
novelist Vance Palmer. He was born in Bundaberg in 1885 and
generations of Australian school children studied his novel
The Passage.
In recent times Criena Rohan's The Delinquents , which
opens with the main characters, Brownie and Lola, making
love 'under the frangipani trees on the banks of the Burnett
River' has achieved fame as a movie with Kylie Minogue in
the leading female role.
Today Bundaberg is a thriving city dominated by the
sugarcane industry which surrounds it, but also supported by
the growth of beef and dairy cattle, tropical fruit and
tomatoes. There are four sugar mills in the area and the
port handles bulk sugar and molasses as well as petroleum
and fertilizer. The area provides nearly 20 per cent of
Australia's sugar and is the country's largest producer of
both brown rum and tomatoes.
Things to see:
Buildings
In the centre of town, particularly in Bourbong Street,
there are a number of impressive buildings. The superb
Commercial Bank building, on the corner of Maryborough and
Bourbong Streets, was completed in 1891. Now listed on the
National Estate its colonnades, cast-iron balustrade, French
windows, excellent cedar joinery and elaborate staircase all
indicate the importance municipal Bundaberg had achieved by
that time.
The 30-metre high post office clock tower dominates the
town. Over the road from the post office is the School of
Arts building (1889) which houses the art gallery.
In front of Christ Church, a handsome sandstone building
with a distinct Norman flavour, is a monument to Bert
Hinkler.
A recent addition is the gigantic Humpback whale mural
which adorns the Suncorp building in Bourbong St.

The Water Tower
On the way to the Bundaberg Rum refinery it is worth pausing
at the water tower in Sussex Street. This unusual
eight-storey building is listed on the National Trust. It is
notable for the fact that: 'On each storey the brick work is
punctuated by eight round arched windows, four blind and
four glazed, and each with stone sills. The tower is a
landmark in North Bundaberg and a structure of industrial
archaeological significance.'
St John's Lutheran Church
Looking south from the Water Tower it is possible to see the
impressive facade on St John's Lutheran Church with its
texts from The Bible in huge letters. It is certainly one of
the most unusual churches in Australia.
Schmeider's Cooperage and Craft Centre
Near the famous Bundaberg Rum Distillery, at 5 Alexandra
Road, is Schmeider's Cooperage where the ancient art of
barrel-making is practiced. Situated in a 100-year-old
building it is a typical tourist destination with lots of
gifts, a video explaining the art of cooperage,
demonstrations of the craft and mini barrels for the
souvenir hunter.
Bundaberg Rum Distillery
Bundaberg's greatest tourist attraction is the Bundaberg Rum
Distillery which is clearly signposted (not that you could
miss the smoking chimneys) off the road to Bargara and the
port. Hour-long conducted tours of the distillery leave the
visitors' centre at 10.00 am, 11.00 am, 1.00 pm, 2.00 pm and
3.00 pm daily. Unfortunately visitors do not get to sample
the end product. So you dutifully observe the fermenting
tanks, wash column, condensers, pot still, maturation vats
and bottling and, just as your heart is crying out for a nip
of 'Bundy Rum', it is whisked away, labelled, and packed in
cartons.
There are lots of songs, ditties and poems celebrating
the qualities of Bundaberg Rum but none has the quality of
William Neville Scott's:
Bundaberg rum, overproof rum
will tan your insides and grow hair on your bum
Let the blue ribbon beat on his empty old drum
or his waterlogged belly, we'll stick to our rum.
The Hummock
Off the road to Bargara, and clearly marked, is the
low-lying volcanic remnant known as The Hummock which,
although only 96 m above sea-level, offers the visitor good,
though not inspirational, views over the whole area. The
ocean is visible to the east while, to the west, the sugar
fields can be seen encircling the city with the smoke stacks
of the Bundaberg Rum Distillery on the horizon.
Sugar Facilities
19 km north east of Bundaberg are the city's huge
sugar-loading facilities which are located beside the river.
Tours are available. The major terminal has a building which
is 425 m long.
The Botanical Gardens and the Museum
On the Mount Perry Road into Bundaberg (the Gin Gin Highway)
is the city's prize tourist attraction - the superb
Botanical Gardens Complex in which Bert Hinkler's English
home and the local museum are located along with a gift shop
and good eating facilities. The setting is delightful with
lots of subtropical plants set around a lagoon with
waterlilies and a number of wooden walkways.
The local historical society has moved from the School of
Arts building in the main street of Bundaberg and their
display includes lots of memorabilia from the local area.
The large modern building makes it one of the most pleasant
and accessible folk museums in the country.
But the real highlight of the Botanical Gardens complex
is the Hinkler House Memorial Museum.
The story of the house almost rivals that of its famous
occupant. A brochure put out by the Bundaberg District
Tourism and Development Board explains:
'Late in 1982 the house in which Bert Hinkler lived and
planned his daring solo flights was under immediate threat
of demolition. This unique piece of aviation history,
located in 29 Lydgate Road, Thornhill, Southampton, was
saved through the efforts of a small band of dedicated
Bundaberg residents...In mid-1983, a group of
three...travelled to Southampton and with the help of
British Aerospace and officers of the British, Dutch and
Australian Navies training at the time in Southampton,
dismantled the house brick-by-brick, marked every segment
and packed it in two 20 tonne containers...[it has been]
painstakingly...restored as a fitting memorial to
Bundaberg's most famous son.
Overlooking the school where Hinkler was educated, the
lagoons where as a boy he studied the ibis in flight and the
park where he landed in triumph in 1928, the house is well
sited and has become the focus of Bundaberg's new Botanic
Gardens at the northern entrance to the city.
Against a background of exquisite mid 20s decor, the
Hinkler story emerges through pictorial display and
priceless memorabilia.'
Herbert John Louis Hinkler was born in Bundaberg on 8
December 1892. In an effective flying life of twenty years
(he successfully built a glider at the age of twenty) this
modest and unassuming man notched up an impressive array of
records and 'firsts'.
Following training with the Sopwith Aviation Co. in
England, Hinkler served with the Royal Naval Air Service in
the First World War and was awarded the Distinguished
Service Medal. He joined A. V. Roe & Co. and in 1920, in an
Avro Baby bought from them, made a non-stop flight from
London to Turin, Italy, covering 1046 km in 9 hours 30
minutes. At the time this was a world record.
In Australia the next year he flew the plane from Sydney
to Bundaberg, 1207 km in 8 hours 40 minutes, establishing
the world's non-stop record for a light plane. He was now
chief test pilot for A. V. Roe and in 1928, flying an Avro
Avian, he made the first successful solo flight from England
to Australia in 15 days plus two and three-quarter hours,
clipping 12 days from the time set for the journey by Ross
and Keith Smith in 1919.
Hinkler designed and built the 'Ibis', a two-seater
monoplane, in 1930, but lack of financial support in either
England or Canada prevented its production. However, in
1931, in a Puss Moth he bought in Canada, he made the first
non-stop flight from New York to Jamaica. He then went on to
Venezuela and Trinidad, crossed the South Atlantic from
Brazil to Africa, and journeyed on to London. He thus became
the first to fly the South Atlantic from west to east and
the first to cross the Atlantic in a light aircraft.
In January 1933, in the same plane, he was attempting a
new record for the England-to-Australia run when he crashed
in Italy. He was buried in Florence with full military
honours.
The museum also sells The History of Bundaberg &

The Mystery Craters
Beyond the Hinkler House and the Botanical Gardens , some 28
km from Bundaberg on the Gin Gin Highway, are the
fascinating Mystery Craters. They are one of the most
interesting attractions in the Bundaberg area partly because
they are so substantial and partly because there is just
nothing like them anywhere else in Australia. The Bundaberg
District Tourism and Development Board has written of the
craters, which have featured in the 'Unsolved Mysteries of
the World' TV series, that:
'The secrets of the 35 craters formed in a massive slab
of sandstone have baffled teams of international geologists.
Discovered beneath a layer of silt and sand by a local
farmer in 1971, 27 holes were exposed, another 8 remain in
their pre-discovered state.
An interesting feature is the extremely even distribution
of red ochre through the coloured sandstone as if it was
once churned in a giant cauldron.
Some experts think the craters are part of a large
meteorite while Australian geologists say the area is the
roof a subterranean lake that was caused by oil pressure
underground, or that it was once the edge of the ocean and
is the result of sea action. (The nearest beach is 24 km
away)...It is probably impossible to deduce the exact manner
of formation. One thing is certain, they are at least 25
million years old.'
The craters are, on average, only a few metres across.
They can be viewed at close quarters and there is an
observation platform which allows people to get an overview
of the whole area. They are open from 8.00 am - 5.00 pm,

Tropical Wines and Sunny Soft Drinks

fruits such as pineapple, passionfruit, peach, guava, plum,

Avocado Grove
This large and very attractive garden contains a range of
orchids, unusual fruit trees, tropical ferns and some exotic
birds, including a pair of albino peacocks. There is a
nature walk through a small rainforest and a restaurant,
tel: (07) 4159 7367. It is located on Dr Mays Crossing Rd,
south of Bundaberg.
Boyd's Antiquatorium
Located in Bourbong St West, a kilometre beyond the
hospital, this is a diverse private collection of items
including an extensive displays of musical instruments and
coins, to vintage cars, cameras and motorcycles, tel: (07)

Ten-Pin Bowling/Mini-Golf
Bundy Bowl and Leisure Complex offers ten-pin bowling,
mini-golf and a video arcade. They are located at 17 Lester

Lady Elliot Island
Flights depart daily from Bundaberg Airport to Lady Elliot
Island, a coral cay less than half and hour away. There is a
resort on the island where whale and turtle-watching can be
enjoyed in season. Ring the Bundaberg Information Centre for

Lady Musgrave Island National Park
Lady Musgrave Island is an 14-ha coral cay of the Bunker
Group, Surrounded by a coral reef with a circumference of 8
km, it is noted for its plenitude of brilliantly coloured
tropical fish, its hard and soft corals, casuarina and
pisonia forest, white sandy beaches, and its nesting turtles
and seabirds, particularly the terns which nest here on a
seasonal basis. Bush camping is permitted on the island but
there are no shops and no facilities (come prepared for
self-sufficiency with fresh water and a fuel stove) and
spaces are limited so bookings are required. It can also get
noisy during the tern nesting season. Bushwalking, nature
study, reef walking, diving and snorkelling can all be

Lady Musgrave Barrier Reef Cruises provide day trips to
Lady Musgrave Island. A day trip includes the options of
snorkelling off a floating pontoon, scuba diving (for an
additional fee), or simply viewing the reef via the
semi-submersible, which offer views from two metres below
the waterline, or the glass-bottom boats. Other activities
include fish feeding, island walks with commentary, a
seafood lunch and morning and afternoon tea. Reef walking
shoes and sunscreen are provided. The cruises depart from
Port Bundaberg on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and
Sunday. Boardings are at 8.00 a.m. for an 8.30 departure and
the vessel returns at 5.45 p.m. The cost, at March 31, 2003,
is $139 for adults and $71 for chidren (4-14 years).

Burrum Coast National Park (Kinkuna Section)
Burrum Coast National Park (23 100 ha) is an undeveloped
wilderness area suited to those interested in bushwalking,
nature photography and birdwatching. It has spectacular
wildflower displays in the spring and early summer. Good
National Parks and Wildlife brochures and maps are
available. Access by conventional vehicle is very limited
and a 4WD is recommended. There are no developed campsites
or facilities. Those choosing to bush camp must be
self-sufficient in terms of food, water and medical
supplies.
Palm Beach is a delight and the hinterland is
characterised by low-lying sandy plains. Species such as
beach spinifex, coastal sheoak and the colourful blooms and
seeds of climbing guinea flower and coastal jack bean bind
the coastal dunes. Immediately behind the dunes are sandy
ridges covered by shrublands and low-standing open forests
of eucalyptus, vine thickets and wattles. The plains of the
hinterland are characterised by shallow soils, out of which
grow communities of wallum and heath such as wallum banksia
- unusual in Queensland - teatrees and white mahogany. Some
rather rare species exist in pockets with deeper soils
(including Livistonia palm forests in the Woodgate section,
and, in the Kinkuna section, Melaleuca cheelii and the cycad
Macrozamia lomindroides). The estuaries of Coonarr and
Theodolite Creek in the north, and the Gregory and Burrum
Rivers in the south, are lined with red mangrove communities
and the Woodgate section also has some swamp environs. Birds
are plentiful around these waterways in the early morning.
Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs in nests on the beach
from November to April, so be careful where you tread. Other
fauna in the park includes a wide range of birdlife, such as
the migratory rainbow bee-eater, lizards, snakes and
noctural mamals such as sugar gliders, feather-tail gliders,
bats and marsupial mice.
To access the northern section of the park, follow the
Bundaberg-Goodwood-Childers Rd and turn off into Coonarr Rd
at the railway underpass. This intersection is 23 km south
of Bundaberg. Follow Coonarr Rd for 8 km, alongside Elliott
River, then turn right, heading south along Palm Beach Rd,
and you will come to the park boundary in one kilometre.
From this point signs lead to the bush camping areas behind
the foredune. Permits must be obtained before setting up
camp and these permits are available from the
self-registration stations at the camping areas. For further

Bundaberg and the Coral Isles Tourist Guide which contains
excellent maps of the city and the surrounding area.
